Alexandria, VA (July 30, 2013) –The Vision Council was in attendance at last week’s ninth annual BlogHer Conference, the largest gathering of bloggers in the United States. Serving as both a sponsor for BlogHer’s HealthMinder Day and a special event host, The Vision Council networked with more than 5,000 bloggers who participated in the three day conference in Chicago, including bloggers focused on parenting, safety, lifestyle and health issues.
BlogHer ’13 is one of several initiatives that The Vision Council has championed as a part of its summer UV campaign. The large community of influential bloggers provided The Vision Council a unique opportunity to educate attendees about UV damage and the protective eyewear options available to both adults and children. The event also afforded The Vision Council a timely opportunity to discuss the revitalized Think About Your Eyes campaign, explaining the need for bloggers and their readers to pursue frequent, comprehensive eye exams.
“The Vision Council is extremely grateful for the opportunities provided at BlogHer ’13,” said Ed Greene, CEO of The Vision Council. “We met thousands of bloggers from across the country who are enthusiastic to share our resources and messages with their readers. We very much look forward to partnering with our new contacts in the future and finding ways to keep the public informed about healthy vision habits.”
On Thursday, July 25, The Vision Council managed an exhibit booth at HealthMinder Day, where nearly 600 conference attendees gathered to hear experts comment about caregiving, special needs and fitness. The 2013 UV report, children’s UV safety kit, and Think About Your Eyes campaign materials were distributed over an eight-hour period. Attendees were also invited to examine existing UV skin damage using The Vision Council’s Dermascan booth.
The following day, 50 select bloggers were invited to attend The Vision Council’s “Eye on Summer Safety” special event, held just prior to the evening’s keynote address. Attendees met with Dr. Desiree Owen, local optometrist and The Vision Council spokesperson, and were outfitted in various UV-protective sunglasses. The event included four UV safety stations, including a Dermascan booth and an advice corner with tips to help adults remember their sunglasses. Bloggers were pre-selected and included professionals focused on parenting, fashion, and health and travel. Over the next two weeks, all attendees will receive a follow-up conference pack, including sun-safe giveaways and Think About Your Eyes campaign materials.
Other conference sponsors included nationally-recognized corporations and brands like Folgers, Dodge and Samsung. Actress Queen Latifah served as a featured emcee for the Friday “Voices of the Year” community keynote and the conference concluded with a closing keynote by Gale Anne Hurd of The Walking Dead.
