Known as the Golden Age, all things 1920’s is back in a major way with Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby having made a major impact even before the film’s debut. The Roaring Twenties was a time of prosperity for many in the United States, and a time for celebration with the completion of World War I. Women and men shook off the confines of the Victorian Age, with women adopting a flapper style and bob hairstyles.
Style of The Great Gatsby Era
The 1920’s is most characterized by the visual arts design of Art Deco, best exemplified in the design of the Chrysler Building in New York City. As the Victoria & Albert Museum describes,” Art Deco represented many things for many people. It was the style of the flapper girl and the factory, the luxury ocean liner and the skyscraper, the fantasy world of Hollywood and the real world of the Harlem Renaissance. Art Deco affected all forms of design, from the fine and decorative arts to fashion, film, photography, transport and product design. It was modern and it was everywhere”.
Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby
Leonardo DiCaprio plays Jay Gatsby, and Carey Mulligan is his great love, Daisy Buchanan. The costume design of the film, a collaboration between costume designer, Catherine Martin, and Prada’s Miuccia Prada, has been integral in spotlighting 1920’s fashion. As Catherine Martin noted,”Baz and Miuccia have always connected on their shared fascination with finding modern ways of releasing classic and historical references from the shackles of the past”. Through their lens yesterday’s fashions are made new again.
