Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll probably know that 70s fashion is all the rage for SS16. But I don’t want to talk about that right now. Because for many seasons, 70s boho has been flirting with my wardrobe and quite frankly, I never really know whether it’s coming or going.
So as much as I love 1970s fashion and all the free love that comes with it, I want to forget it for now. I want to talk about the 60s instead. I always feel that the 60s is an integral part of fashion, whether people realise it or not.
It could be an oversized button on your woollen coat, a simple black dress with white trim detailing, or the geometric angle of your purse. Yes, the sixties is a trend but it’s also a staple. Because sixties fashion can be as bold or subtle as you like; you’re always in the driving seat. That’s why it’s one of my favourite looks, especially with sunglasses.
Designers such as Holly Fulton, Orla Kiely and Gucci paid homage to the 60s look for their SS16 catwalks, despite the main focus being 70s hippie and 70s boho, and here we look at some classic vintage 60s inspired sunglasses that are right on trend, yet still timeless enough to see you through the next few years:
Oversized Square Sunglasses
The SS16 Gucci fashion campaign featured a fair mix of both 60s geometrics and 70s boho, giving the overall collective a unique turn-of-the-decade sort of feel. Bringing both prescription glasses and sunglasses into the mix, Gucci managed to create some seriously iconic looks, all designed with a modern day twist.
If you want something bold, daring and unapologetically retro, the Gucci GG 3713/S sunglasses are seriously on fleek and they’ll always have a place in your wardrobe, no matter the season.
60s Monochrome Sunglasses
Call yourself a 60s chick? Then you have to own a pair of monochromatic sunnies; black and white set the tone for this incredible decade and monochromes + geos were the backbone of Mod fashion.
But the best thing about monochrome sunglasses is that it will never, ever, ever, ever go out of style; it’s eternally stylish. Black and white will always have a role to play in trend development, so if you’re looking for a pair of 1960s inspired sunglasses that will last and last, choose these oversized Karl Lagerfeld KL832S sunglasses.
Colourful Cateye Sunglasses
Cateye sunglasses are a given. Anyone who’s anyone in fashion owns at least one pair, right? Well, this season the cateye look takes a new turn. Because SS16 is all about patterns, prints and bright colour pairings. And this campaign by Bvlgari certainly draws plenty of inspo from the colour popping, flower power loving, head-turning 60s!
Colour was everything in the swinging sixties and was often used as a form of expression for liberated women. If you love the colour/ateye combo, take a look at these strikingly bold Bvlgari BV8168B sunglasses. We just love them…
60s Stripe Sunglasses
These sunglasses look like they’ve been built purely on trend, we get that. But before you turn away, just look a little closer. What do you see? Stripes? Yep that’s right, stripes. And where do you see stripes in modern fashion? Everywhere.
Stripes have a place on the runway every single year; spring, summer, autumn or winter, stripes always play a key role in womenswear collections. So although this look is totally on-trend, it’s also a stripy staple (a timeless one) that can come out every time you feel like channelling your inner 60s vixen. Stand out with a classic and shop these spectacular Dolce & Gabbana DG4191P STRIPES SPECIAL PROJECT sunglasses, available online now.
