With New York Fashion Week Spring 2013 winding down, the direction of many of the top houses are being analyzed and clear trends are emerging.
Below are four of the trends that we were most excited to see presented at NYFW:
Modern Sportif
Alexander Wang is known for his appeal to the downtown crowd, and had them cheering throughout his show with a glow-in-the-dark finale that blew the fashion set away. Vogue.com wrote that “deconstructing garments is not a new conceit in fashion … but the designer proved his authority in this collection by taking that idea in an intriguing direction that stayed true to his own streamlined, hard-edged contemporary sportif-chic aesthetic.”
Lacoste was also lauded for their “street-conscious feel,” that, according to the International Herald Tribune, found a way not to deviate “too far from the essence of the French sportswear brand.”
Dark Classics
Grazia Daily wrote of Rodarte that the “kooky (a.k.a. genius) Mulleavy sisters delved deep into their Pandora’s box of tricks this season, giving us a heady mix of Medieval meets motorbiker maven, looking as though they’d stepped out of an episode of Game of Thrones and into a dark and fantastical remake of Easy Rider.”
Theyskens’ Theory showed a number of black on black pieces, including dark slouchy suits and dresses with soft lines.
Graphic Attitude
The Marc Jacobs collection harkened back to a minimalistic take on the Factory days in New York that were an “icy pinnacle of New York cool where Edie reigned as the archetypal It girl,” according to Tim Blanks at Style.com.
Also marrying graphic details and leather was Proenza Schouler, whose designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez “claimed Tumblr as a point of reference, citing its random associations and the delight-producing effects of happenstance”.
Future Romance
Known for her wrap dresses and bohemian aesthetic, Diane von Furstenberg’s NYFW Spring 2013 collection did not disappoint. With flowing, layered pieces Diane surprised the audience by going beyond new offerings in eyewear by partnering with Google with models wearing Google Glass glasses to film point-of-view video throughout the show. The partnership demonstrated how romance, functionality and technology can blend seamlessly.
Audience members, including Sarah Jessica Parker, were also delighted by the frames. As Diane commented on her Goggle Glass video for her collection, “we live in such an amazing world; things that we thought would be science fiction exist”.
