When it comes to your LBD, you don’t often think of sunglasses for accessories. You’ll probably be shopping for the perfect heels and the perfect clutch bag or maybe even the perfect jewellery to compliment your look. But if you’re dressing up for a daytime event such as a wedding, the races, a fancy lunch, a regatta or a royal gala, sunglasses should be your first priority.
1) Because they add instant glam to any outfit (never leave home without your sunglasses dahling!)
2) because you’ll need sufficient UV eye protection if you’re going to be enjoying a day out in the lovely summer sunshine.
But when it comes to styling shades with your LBD, there are a few style rules to stick to. After all, a pair of neon pink wayfarers aren’t exactly going to bring out the best features of a 1920s style dress and a pair of aviators probably won’t complement your ball gown too well…
So here are 3 different LBD styles and tips on how to accessorise with sunglasses for formal daytime occasions.
Little Black Dress #1 – Short & Simple
If you’re going for a simple black mini dress, you’ll benefit from having the most versatile piece that can be accessorised in so many different ways. Choose a simple shape, a plain fabric and pretty much anything goes. It gives you room to experiment with different accessories and different sunglasses styles.
Alexander Wang dress, Louboutin So Kate 120 heels, YSL Monogram Saint Laurent clutch
Take a simple dress – like this tank dress from Alexander Wang, team with your best patent leather heels and opt for something with embellishments like the Valentino V690SR shades. They’ll look great with gold, silver or gunmetal costume jewellery…
Little Black Dress #2 – The Ball Gown
If it’s a black tie affair and you’re styling up a ball gown, any old specs simply won’t do. Make sure you go for something ultra chic, ultra slick and ultra feminine. Avoid wayfarers, ditch the trusty aviators and don’t go too crazy with colours. Stick to something glam and classic like an oversized black frame like these Tiffany sunnies…
Zac Posen Faille Trumpet gown, Victoria Beckham Mini Bow clutch, Jimmy Choo Lang sandals
Strappy sandals (like these fabulous gem encrusted Jimmy Choos above) will give you day to night appeal and timeless sunglasses like these Tiffany & Co. TF4086H sunglasses will add an air of Hollywood glam to your outfit.
Little Black Dress #3 – The Sexy Midi
Midi dresses are so sexy, and they’re super modern too. If you want to add an extra edge to your formal daytime attire, team your LBD with some bright colours to make it pop. A midi dress can be easily styled up or down too depending on the event / occasion and because this shape is utterly timeless, you’ll get so much wear out of it season after season.
Topshop midi dress, Manolo Blahnik Orlana heels, Mulberry Postman’s Lock clutch bag
This gorgeous ensemble has a much more relaxed look and features a mix of colours including bright pink sandals by Manolo Blahnik, a brown leather shoulder bag by Mulberry – finished off with a pair of Dior LADYINDIOR2F sunglasses in pink to make the boys wink! ?
