Statement sunglasses are huge for spring/summer 2016 – the bolder the better. Key trends include bright colours, geometric shapes and patterned frames as featured in collections from Gucci, Miu Miu, Dolce & Gabbana and Dior to name a few.
But straying away from your usual styles and classic shapes can make dressing a little more difficult. Just how do you style statement sunglasses without looking too out-there? To give you some inspiration, here are three summer outfit ideas featuring some of our favourite SS16 sunnies.
Stand-out Shapes
Forget simple round or square shades; one of our favourite looks this season are sunglasses with exclusively-shaped frames. Miu Miu are top of the game when it comes to stand-out shapes for SS16. Their collection includes quirky cat eye frames and unique designs such as the Miu Miu MU 06QS sunglasses, which feature semi-rimless frames.
Geometric shapes and bold designs have a cool, contemporary vibe, which is worth keeping in mind when styling them. Get a laidback summer look by pairing them with this season’s ripped jeans and a sleeveless tee. To continue the contemporary theme, add a modern backpack and minimalist white sneakers. Finish the look with accessories, but keep them sleek and simple.
Colourful Shades
Summer is the perfect time to add some colour to your wardrobe, and a pair of brightly-coloured shade is best way to do it. For SS16, swap your boring black frames for a more daring pair such as the 0MK2015B WILLA I sunglasses from Michael Kors. These statement shades feature gold arms and are available in a range of beautiful tones including sapphire blue, emerald green, fushcia and red.
When styling a pair of colourful sunnies, we suggest keeping the rest of your outfit light and neutral; fresh white and soft pink are perfect for the spring/summer season and will let your sunglasses take centre stage. The Michael Kors WILLA 1 sunglasses feature retro-inspired over-sized round frames, so we’ve paired them with a pleated skirt and a white crop top for a vintage vibe. To complete the outfit, pick out the colour of your shades with some matching accessories or makeup for a colour-cordinated look.
Patterned Sunnies
Patterned shades may seem a little daring if you’re used to plain frames, but this new trend will be huge for spring/summer 2016. Stripes, florals and animal prints have all been spotted in recent months.
Dolce & Gabbana featured patterned frames in their SS16 eyewear campaign and their new collection is full of bold designs, such as the DG4249 striped sunglasses. Available in classic colourways such as red and white or blue and white, these stylish sunnies have a nautical vibe that’s perfect for the summer season.
To style these Dolce & Gabbana striped shades, continue with the nautical theme, but keep the look simple; adding extra patterns and too many colours will clash. For a beach-ready summer look, pair them with a simple white sun dress and neutral accessories such as tan sandals and a straw hat and bag. Hints of navy blue will complete the look.
